Show Low - It's an interesting name for a town, isn't it?
Show Low originally was a ranch consisting of nearly 100,000 acres co-owned by Marion Clark and a US Army scout, Corydon Cooley. Over time, somewhere around 1876, things got to the point where it seemed the ranch wasn’t “big enough” for both men so one would have to go. To settle their dispute, they agreed to play cards to see who stayed and who left. However, after playing all night without either having a winning hand, Clark suggested they cut the cards and whoever would “show low” at the cut would get the ranch. It was Cooley who turned up the deuce of Clubs and therefore won the ranch, cattle, crops and all the buildings. The main street in town is still called the “Deuce of Clubs”.
